Mayim Bialik Used Labor Techniques to Cope With Accident Pain

When Mayim Bialik was seriously injured in a recent car accident her first thought was of her children. “I remember I thought, I’m a mom, this is not happening,” she recalled during an Access Hollywood appearance. “I have kids waiting for me. It’s my son’s birthday – and it was. That was my first thought.”

Once at the emergency room, the Big Bang Theory actress opted to go without pain medication until she was put under to have surgery on her hand.

“[I used] a lot of deep breathing,” the mother of 6-year-old Miles and 4-year-old Fred explained of managing her pain. “Everything I used for natural labor, I absolutely used at the scene of this accident.”

Mayim went on to say the experience, while truly painful, “really reaffirmed my faith in pain with a purpose and the meditative properties, the ability to lower your blood pressure, which women do in labor. It absolutely is what I used to get me through all stages of this [experience].”

Interesting idea, to use labor methods to manage other kinds of pain. I wonder if this is common because I had not heard of it before. The benefit is what? To lower your blood pressure naturally?
